I have to do a 2500 word term paper regarding post war Japanese film and how a film is related to Japan/Japanese society. I'm VERY TROUBLED because I have no idea which film to choose. I want to do both equally badly.

So here are my two films.

1. Ghost in the Shell (1st Movie) – Oshii Mamoru
Rationale : To examine how the sense of “self” and “other” of the Japanese is represented in the film through the cyberpunk genre: the “Ghost” in contemporary Japanese society.

OR

2. Byousoku 5cm – Makoto Shinkai
Rationale: To examine Japanese and the notion of ‘distance’, internally and externally (also spatially and temporary), and how it relates to Japanese youth in the 21st century.

EDIT:

LOL, update on the progress. It's split right in the middle. Strangely, the girls all say that I should do Byousoku and the guys tell me to do GITS.

As someone caught inbetween, this is an interesting predicament. LOL. Though, I'm thinking of doing some GITS essay for fun (yah I'm crazy I know) and doing the term paper for Byousoku. Because well, GITS is fun.

I'm incoherent.

I rewatched GITS and watched GITS SAC SSS, and hi I'm going to buy the DVD for the latter now and spam my money on tachikoma models. I like tachikoma. Give me tachikoma. They are like, the Pikachu/soft cuddly sidekicks of cyberspace. With guns.

I vote for byousoku 5cm - GIS is a bit overused in the selfvsother genre.....'sides, distance is always more interesting than self.

Yarr... I'm really concerned about how overdone GIS is. Plus the fact that 2500 words is really too restrictive to do a good job for GIS in my opinion...

Byousoku 5cm's so new that lol, I can be one of the leading forerunners in analytical literature. LOL

Though, regarding written material I need to back up my claims for the term paper... It'll definitely be a relatively easier job if I do GIS. There's lots of things (and overused like you said) regarding the Japanese perception of self and other, and like a sizable chunk of things on Oshii's stuff.

I managed to find some books about what I'm going to talk about in Byousoku, but it's comparatively, really little to work with. STILL. I MUST SPREAD THE BYOUSOKU LOVE.

Oh and to reply to your poll- Go Gits. Plenty of academic research papers on it, so it helps with factual backing.

Kekekeke! Yeah, I'm doing a Post-war Japanese Film & Anime class and fwafwafwa I get to use animated feature films. My tutor was totally against using episodic stuff so ;__;.

Yeah... there' a lot of stuff out there on Gits which is both intimidating and relieving. D: ZOMG MORE PEOPLE ANSWER MY POLL SO I WON'T HAVE A TIE AGAIN. XO

Even if you don't want to use anime, there's so much good post-war Japanese films to write about. I did a academic paper last year on Japanese films (from the birth till post-war), and whoa, got to read up on a lot of amazing stuff.

If I can find my paper I can probably get some of those books I used to help you with it. =O

Yeah! I was actually thinking about using Tony Takitani but Byousoku 5cm is lodged in my brain a bit. I've got some books relating to the theme I'd most probably be talking about, I just have to figure out a way to fit the information in unobtrusively...

O: Sometimes I wish I was studying film in detail!!

GITS IS TOTALLY AWESOME RIGHT. *spazzes* Hahah, I'm totally biased towards it because of the same reason, that it's THE most dakjr;wjwe anime movie ever!

But there are so many people that are using this film that it gets very blah to do it as a term paper. D:

I just watched SSS online and it's definitely worth paying $70 for!

Though, if you can you should try and grab a copy (or like go to crunchyroll.com) to catch Byousoku 5cm. It's the perfect film for when you just want to chill out and watch something really refreshing.

Tachikoma
