OKAY! Before anyone else thinks that I'm some sadistic bitch who only hears and wants to proclaim one side of the story, let me say that I've been on both sides of the 'iron curtain' on Capital Punishment. I have done my research and read sufficiently enough. Enough for a retard like me. Or rather, enough for a brainwashed citizen of Singapore. ;D
I'm not some brainless government supporter (in this case the PAP). People who know me should know that in actual fact, I think most of the goverment's policies are kinda stupid. And that's an understatement. They've made great successes over the years but at the cost of insane rules like, anyone remember our famous no-chewing-gum policy? And let's not forget what a fine city we are.
With regard to the Nguyen Tuong Van case, this was my first post over here.
And this is my response to a comment in my previous Nguyen post.
"I understand that having the highest execution rate per capita in the world is ironic. It's like saying that executing people has absolutely no effect on reducing the crime rate.
Personally I don't condone capital punishment per say, but I'm (hypocritically) willing to make a few exceptions.
With regard to my government being insane, I can't agree fully. Yeah the oral sex and homosexual sex issue is extremely ridiculous. I mean, how the hell do they want to go about catching and punishing people who engage in fellatio? I never really understood that. On the other hand, we're secular state and well, as the government has said over and over again: we're a conservative society. Too conservative I must say, though.
Nguyen Tuong Van's sentencing might have been overboard but I do agree with some respect to the government's reasoning. Had they granted clemency to him, what about all the rest of the other people they/we had killed of? What's more, if we let Nguyen who came in with 392.8mg (excuse me if the numbers are not accurate) off, what about all the other people who smuggled in less than that?
Granted, this whole law and order issue is a touchy one. Nothing will ever really satisfy the public's view of a 'safe society'. I don't even know how Singapore's reputation as a 'safe country' holds up anymore. Yet, if we did abolish or have more lenient sentences, would that serve the purpose of bringing down the number of drug trafficking or crimes committed?
Oh and let's not forget the stupid CHEWING GUM LAW.
On a side note, I feel that caning's worse than hanging. :x"
I feel like I'm bloody repeating myself. Anyway, I'd just like to thank my eh, commenter from 'over the iron curtain' for saying all of that. I need to keep on my toes. :\
EDIT:
In addition to the 'conservative society' plea, one mustn't forget that Asian communities tend to (note, tend to) be more conservative than the west. Hell, we ONLY let the Crazy Horse Cabaret in this year and BUNGEE JUMPING of all things, in last year. This shows what afucked up society we are. We're predominently brought up on Confucian beliefs and values, and our major religions here are equally or similarly conservative.
We've only have 3 generations, maximum 4, as a nation. To eradicate all our quirks and come out as a so-called liberal society as the west are, presumably takes more than that. Hell, people actually complain when they see youths kissing and well doing things that would be acceptable in Western or more 'liberal' societies.
