It's inhumane for the Singaporean Government to sentence to death Nguyen Tuong Van.

But is it inhumane for us to let this man go free, this man would would have brought approximately 400mg of heroin to Australia which then would create the deaths of so many more people?

I don't see why these Australians are getting so heated up about. Like I said in my previous post about this matter, the guy broke the law. So what if he's saving his brother. He ends up killing so many more people.

What's worse is that Dr Chee is so-called betraying his motherland. In actual fact, he's probably undermining any chance he has of actually gaining any politcal ground here, the stupid bastard. In conclusion kids, reading the newspapers is good. Especially the forum section. The letter sent in by an Australian was extremely welcome, in my eyes. Thank you for showing that there's the other side as compared to what local and Australian newspapers are reporting.

Manda's coming home today! (Along with Wee Min, Angel, Kevin etc etc etc) Yay! I can finally have someone to repeatedly message to now. On the other hand, tomorrow marks my proficiency test. :\

Haha, someone was at Takashimaya's MOS Burger wearing the brinjal shirt (again) :p.

Singapore is known for its punishment-doesn't-fit-the-crime attitude. It's pretty brutal to cane people, let alone executing them by hanging.

Sure he broke the law in your country, but you're not alone in the world, and these brutal and unfit punishments will diplomatically bite you in the ass. According to Amnesty International you have the highest execution rate per capita in the world. You know it's bad when you outrank the US.

Your goverment is insane, for example it's illegal to have oral, anal or homosexual sex?! I can live without the third kind but this is just crazy. You'd expect this crap from the Vatican, but then again, you are living in a one-party state run by puritan old men (who probably have oral sex all the time with their secretaries).

Greetings from the other side of the "iron curtain".

I understand that having the highest execution rate per capita in the world is ironic. It's like saying that executing people has absolutely no effect on reducing the crime rate.

Personally I don't condone capital punishment per say, but I'm (hypocritically) willing to make a few exceptions.

With regard to my government being insane, I can't agree fully. Yeah the oral sex and homosexual sex issue is extremely ridiculous. I mean, how the hell do they want to go about catching and punishing people who engage in fellatio? I never really understood that. On the other hand, we're secular state and well, as the government has said over and over again: we're a conservative society. Too conservative I must say, though.

Nguyen Tuong Van's sentencing might have been overboard but I do agree with some respect to the government's reasoning. Had they granted clemency to him, what about all the rest of the other people they/we had killed of? What's more, if we let Nguyen who came in with 392.8mg (excuse me if the numbers are not accurate) off, what about all the other people who smuggled in less than that?

Granted, this whole law and order issue is a touchy one. Nothing will ever really satisfy the public's view of a 'safe society'. I don't even know how Singapore's reputation as a 'safe country' holds up anymore. Yet, if we did abolish or have more lenient sentences, would that serve the purpose of bringing down the number of drug trafficking or crimes committed?

Oh and let's not forget the stupid CHEWING GUM LAW.

On a side note, I feel that caning's worse than hanging. :x

In addition to the 'conservative society' plea, one mustn't forget that Asian communities tend to (note, tend to) be more conservative than the west. Hell, we ONLY let the Crazy Horse Cabaret in this year and BUNGEE JUMPING of all things, in last year. This shows what a fucked up society we are. We're predominently brought up on Confucian beliefs and values, and our major religions here are equally or similarly conservative.

We've only have 3 generations, maximum 4, as a nation. To eradicate all our quirks and come out as a so-called liberal society as the west are, presumably takes more than that. Hell, people actually complain when they see youths kissing and well doing things that would be acceptable in Western or more 'liberal' societies.
