spiderpig: (just peachy keen)

I've always been closer to my mum's side of the family. They're much more warm and open - less elitist in a way - and for some odd reason, perculiarly artsy. My cousin Y who was in Japan with me, bakes the most scrumptious cakes ever - and he's a guy - and loves to cook. My younger cousin K has become a goth-loli. And then there's the cousin I admire the most, G.

It's probably because she was everything I respected in a person when I was kid. My other paternal cousins were all highflyers, science-oriented people that did well in exams, sailed through life. I could never connect with them. On the otherhand, cousin G was always cool. She had Sailor Moon manga which I borrowed before I could buy any for myself. She lent me books and comics. Her room was always a treasure trove of artsy things to my childish sensibilities. My brother, cousin K (her sister) and I would pile into her room or sneak in, and gape at the little things that littered her room. And when she got an iMac with its candied colours, my respect for her grew even more.

Cousin G wasn't 'one of the many'. She was one-of-a-kind. She went to a polytechnic and did a diploma in visual arts or something to do with visual arts - something which would be totally alien to the paternal side of the family. I remember once, she showed me this huge blown up picture which she shot in a monsoon drain and asked me what could I see.

"Um.. a cow's head?"

"Yup!"

She roused the artistic side in me. It was dreamlike to watch her hold old cameras in her hand, to show us her oil paintings and graphic art. Going overseas only deepened the coolness I saw in her.

Cousin G is now a successful Blythe dress-designer.
