Some guy at this forum I frequent posted this that really ticked me off:

"Erm.. Your defintely dead..

First of all.. I don't think there's such a thing as C7.. its D7..

Anyway you're only 13.. You got 2 more years to screw around before you actually start mugging.. I didnt start till the week before my Os anyway..

So enjoy the next 2 years.. Screw up your prelims when you're Sec 4 so you'll get 3 months off the next year. Just do well for your Os and you'll be fine.
"

My answer?

"
KID. DON'T LISTEN TO THIS GUY. XD

Really larhz, if you want to have a chance at the Os, don't screw up and slack your Sec 1 and Sec 2 years. The most important thing is Maths. Don't screw that up. Subjects like Elect Hist and Geog are somewhat "last-min" subjects. You CAN revise them like, two weeks before. But even that's unadvisable.

I'm not asking you to bury your head in books, but at least keep up to date with your studies. If you want to get any course you want, be it in a top JC or in a Poly, you need grades. Studying last minute or starting to study in Sec 4 WILL screw everything up."

SO KIDS WHO HAVEN'T TAKEN THEIR O LEVELS AND ARE READING THIS. LISTEN TO ME DAMNIT. Don't screw up your life in Singapore, because everything IS based on our fucked up meritocracy and you DO need grades to advance ANYWHERE.

Ah well...unless of course you got the money to go overseas when you screw up here.

Sec one and two's not so bad, just make sure that you get at least the double science class. It's only when you're sec three that you really need to start to study. And you have to take A Maths as well. Ugh. I just realized how important sec school grades really are when I came up to JCs and read all the requirement to what course etc and the requirement for Uni courses...

*sigh* I'm going overseas for my Uni.

You've got a point there, but I dunno, I really wasted away my sec 1 and 2 life by slacking, so my maths' foundation was really bad. I struggled doubly hard during sec 3 and 4. That really sucked. So I was just speaking from experience.

You're going overseas? I'd like to go overseas, but I'd never be able to afford it. :\ But I guess it depends on what you want to study in the end...

What's your sec 1 & 2 subjects? I know that CHIJ St. Theresa had triple science during their first two years in sec school? I only had the usual subjects like Maths, Science, Hist, Geog, Home Ec and D&T for us to try out. My subjects was pretty good when I went to Sec 3 even though I slacked a lot then I took pure Physics and Chemistry.

So yeah from my experience, I gotta say that my sec 1 & 2 years was really, really slack. It's during Sec 3 & 4 that you gotta watch out for. *shrugs* Do you think the school matters?

I guess the school matters to a certain extent. I was averaging around 59-60% every year for my total grade but it was viewed as "BAD!!!".

We had about the same subject combination? Only that our "Science" was split up and done in "shifts". It was kinda confusing. But I never had any aptitude in math since primary school so I just flopped. XD

What defines success in Singapore? Good grades, branded university on scholarship, well paying civil service job? My main gripe with our system is that it holds too narrow a definition of success and ostracizes those who choose alternative pathways. These people are then considered to be jealous when they criticize the system.

Ah sorry, LJ didn't email me your reply. I can't remember what my grades were in Sec 1&2 but I was quite surprised when I got into double science. I was expecting combined science. It was a pleasant surprise I guess.

Have I told you my sec sch yet? I'm in Crescent. The one with the bright yellow blouse and turquoise (sp?) skirt.
